10 Ways to Unwind and Unplug

1) Enjoy a home cooked meal

There is something so calming about preparing dinner for you or your loved ones. We decided to try out the Spinach Grilled Cheese recipe from Getaway Journal and just added a few additions. [Avocado and Monterrary Cheese! Yum!] It was delicious! Cooking has always been very therapeutic for me, especially when I am tucked away in a cabin in the woods. However, if you aren’t much of a chef – don’t worry! Getaway House takes care of all the shopping for you – the cabin is fully stocked with snacks, coffee and tea, and spaghetti marinara you can cook for dinner. You can take this route and show up empty handed if you don’t want to worry about battling the grocery store!

2) Immerse yourself in nature

Lucky for you, Getaway House makes it easier than ever to submerge yourself in nature and truly getaway. Their locations offer the perfect opportunity for stargazing, exploring trails, or simply laying back and admiring being nestled among the trees. Here is the perfect opportunity to live life off the grid and escape the fast paced life for a while.

3) Enjoy a Scenic Overlook

While there is more than enough to keep you occupied at the comfort of your cabin, we decided to explore the town a little bit before staying in for the night. Old Baldy is a beautiful scenic lookout that is only a 12 minute drive from Getaway Cabins Hill Country. Here you can enjoy a moderate hike, with only 218 steps between you and a 360 view of Wimberly.

4) Admire the sunset

This is a no-brainer, but we all need reminders to stop and enjoy the sunset every now and then! Whether it be from your cabin or a nearby trail, seize this opportunity to take in all that nature has to offer.

5) Enjoy a glass of wine

Duchman Winery is one of my favorite wineries in Driftwood. They have a spacious outdoor seating area overlooking the vineyards. If you are hungry, Trattoria Lisina is a highly rated Italian restaurant specializing in Italian dishes and wood fire pizzas. Located adjacent to Duchman Winery, it is the perfect place to grab a quick bite. Whether you want to enjoy a tasting, wine tour, or simply buy a bottle to enjoy back at the comfort of your cabin, I would not miss out on making a visit to this winery.

6) Limit screen time – challenge yourself to lock your phone up!

Since Getaway cabins are hidden deep in the woods, wifi is not alway accessible – making it even easier for you to unplug during your stay! They even have a little “cellphone lockbox” in every cabin that can help reduce your temptation to scroll. After dinner, we put our phones in here and didn’t grab them until checkout the next morning! (Make sure to silence your phone too.) It is so nice to have a break from screen time – even if just for one night!

7) Get lost in a good book

I’ve always been a reader, but lately have had to challenge myself to make time to read for pleasure! The great thing about Getaway Cabin is they stock their cabins with a variety of books for you to enjoy.

8) Play a board game

When it comes to UNO, I have a bit of a competitive streak. You can’t go wrong with bringing an extra stack of cards to enjoy at the end of the night!

9) Journal

Whether it’s 5 minutes or 30, I never regret spending a few extra minutes writing in my journal. In this day and age we have so many outlets on social media to capture our memories on, but there is something different about the good old fashioned pen and paper. Getaway House is an experience you’ll want to remember, so write it down before you forget!

10) End the night with S’mores!

Getaway House was sweet enough to provide us with our own S’mores Kit and we had a blast making them! What better way to end the night then over stargazing with some tasty S’mores?
